The WX500 provides a one line eight character alpha numeric LCD Display, statement/watch/warning light, a S.A.M.E. Alert (Specific Area Message Encoding) and an extendable telescopic antenna.

S.A.M.E. Weather (Specific Area Message Encoding) - Can be programmed to receive special localized weather warnings broadcast by NOAA. Specific Area Message Encoding (S.A.M.E.) weather alert. S.A.M.E. is NOAA’s coded emergency weather signals that identify a specific geographic area affected by an emergency. In weather alert with S.A.M.E. mode, your scanner functions as a county specific severe weather warning radio. To obtain further information about S.A.M.E. and FIPS code, visit http://www.nws.noaa.gov/nwr/index.html . The WX500 can decode the 6-digit Federal Information Processing System (FIPS) code established by the National Weather Service (NWS). This FIPS code identifies geographic areas in the United States, US territories and US possessions. Programming the FIPS code is necessary to receive S.A.M.E. alerts about weather occurring in a particular area. During a NOAAA Weather Alert, a code for your specific location will alert you to severe conditions in your immediate area.
