PROJECT 25 COMPLIANT DIGITAL RADIO
WEST MELBOURNE, FL. April 30, 2002 RELM Wireless Corporation announced that it has successfully demonstrated its new DPH-Series digital portable radio at the International Wireless Communications Exposition (IWCE) last week in Las Vegas. The DPH is compliant with the Association of Public Communications Officials (APCO) Project 25 standard being rapidly adopted by government and public safety land mobile radio (LMR) users nationwide and internationally. The DPH was demonstrated to a focus group comprised of officials from various federal and state government agencies that extensively use two-way radio communications equipment. The format of the demonstration encouraged an open exchange of information among users and the product design staff, helping to assure feedback that would benefit a completed product that meets the end users requirements. The models demonstrated at IWCE were engineering prototypes, with a manufacturing pilot expected in July. Full production runs are expected in September in anticipation of initial shipments in the fourth quarter of 2002. Utilizing state of the art technology, the DPH was developed internally by the Companys engineering team. It offers important and attractive technology advantages over competitive products, including excellent audio clarity and longer battery life. Furthermore, complex, non-critical functions have been eliminated, making the unit very easy to use. Current BK Radio customers will also be able to utilize existing accessories, such as antennas and batteries, significantly reducing their initial investment. Also, the core design of the digital board allows the Companys analog flash GPH portable radios to be upgraded to the new digital platform, allowing current BK Radio analog users to transform their analog units to digital APCO Project 25-compliant radios at a cost lower than the purchase of a completed DPH. Project 25 establishes a standard for digital LMR devices to meet The Federal Communication Commission (FCC) requirements for more efficient use of radio spectrum. It specifies features and signaling for narrow band digital voice and data, in both conventional and trunking modes of operation. The standard has been adopted by the U.S. Federal Government, which has targeted a conversion to Project 25 by the year 2005. A cornerstone of Project 25 is to provide effective inter-operability among users of compliant equipment, regardless of the manufacturer. Through this open system architecture, Project 25 will provide an environment in which users will have a wider selection of LMR suppliers, such as RELM. David Storey, President and CEO of RELM, commented, I cannot overstate the importance of this milestone for our company. We have long believed that APCO Project 25-compliant digital products were a strategic key to our future success. We now control our destiny by owning our digital technology, rather than licensing the technology and products of a competitor. The feedback from the focus group at IWCE was extraordinarily positive, endorsing our product design and features, while providing valuable insight into additional features going forward. We continually strive to fully understand and meet our customers requirements, and their input to this product clearly evidences our commitment to that philosophy. We are looking forward to the launch later this year of an outstanding APCO Project 25-compliant digital portable radio. Also, as a result of our previously announced public rights offering, we anticipate closely following the DPH with its sister product, the DMH digital mobile.
